Culinary word use

One of the emails that periodically appears in my inbox is from Conscious Style Guide about latest articles.  Topics such as unbiased language use are sometimes useful in the process of choosing how to phrase an index entry.  So, I thought I share this useful article.

The latest was Why We Should Examine our Culinary Vocabulary is well worth reading if you’re into food–reading, writing, indexing, or whatever.  There are certainly more new words coming into our cooking vocabulary as we go more global with our eating. Some of these have the potential to be derogatory. I did use  “kaffir”  some years ago until I discovered that it was a derogatory term–offensive to some people. It was the Oxford Companion to Food (as mentioned in this article) that clued me into an alternative term.
